How You Give and Receive Love
1. What Are Love Languages?
Love languages are the primary ways you understand and express love. Based on research by Gary Chapman, there are five: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Receiving Gifts, Acts of Service, and Physical Touch. Understanding your primary love language helps you communicate needs and improves relationship satisfaction.
2. The Five Love Languages
Words of Affirmation:
You feel loved through compliments, encouragement, and verbal appreciation. Make sure your loved ones know you value affirmation and express your love through your words.
Quality Time:
You need undivided attention and presence from people you care about. Create technology-free time and prioritize connection.
Receiving Gifts:
Thoughtful gifts are meaningful symbols of love to you. Express your love by giving gifts that show you know people deeply.
Acts of Service:
You feel loved when someone makes your life easier through helpful actions. Do things for people you care about.
Physical Touch:
You need physical affection — hugs, hand-holding, appropriate touch. Be open about your need for connection.
3. Using Your Results
Communicate your love language to your partner. Ask about their love language. Make efforts to express love in their language, not just yours. Remember that people may have multiple love languages.
